How Much Should Small Business Spend on Marketing?

Your complete marketing budget should include all costs for marketing, advertising, promotions, public relations, events and webinars. This includes social media marketing, print ads, billboards, Facebook/Instagram advertising, Google AdWords, sponsorships and collateral.
Important Note: According to the Small Business Administration, small business with less than $5 million in sales should spend a minimum of 7–8% of gross revenue on marketing. 
 
Many small businesses do not allocate the adequate percentage of their operating budgets to marketing so they rarely see the results desired. The old mantra “build it and they will come” is no longer valid; you must build it and market it effectively to the right target audience. Making sure you market your business to the right customers is probably the most important aspect to your business model this will impact the return on your marketing investment.
